The great majority of the Church is still under the sway of Augustinian influence. It was Augustine of Hippo who made the biggest impact on Christian doctrine, and while he had a grasp of soteriology, the study of salvation and sanctification, he was, in my opinion, a terrible theologian when it came to pretty much every other subject.
I know this seems harsh, but he was the leading influence on abandoning the clear understanding of the early church through the first generations of church fathers concerning the incident in Genesis 6. He popularized the notion that is still taught in cemetaries...I mean seminaries, today. That it was the righteous line of Seth that intermingled with the wicked daughters of Cain that produced the Nephilim. That's absoultely not what the text says! You have to do more hermeneutical gymnastics than Nadia Comenici and Mary Lou Retton ever did combined to reach that conclusion. Augustine didn't like the idea, so he came up with an interpretation. That's eisegesis, not exegesis.
Unfortunately, he applied the some of the same thinking to the interpretation of Revelation. He decided, partially out of his faithfulness to Rome and not wanting to see its kingdom overshadowed, that the vast majority of Revelation should be interpreted allegorically. He specifically honed in on the Millennium, what futurists, who accurately discern the end times, call the 1000 year period where Jesus reigns on Earth after His second coming and before the eternal state - Augustine said that's allegory. Revelation simply described the ongoing battle between good and evil, and shows glimpses of our heavenly estate.
With this allegorical mindset locked in place, pastor/teachers reduce clear signs that the prophets, the apostles, and Jesus Himself said would be specific time markers for the last days prior to His return to nothing more than the ebb and flow of fallen man in the great cosmic battle, and that a determined time Jesus will return to enforce the culmination of His Kingdom. That's only a half-truth, and the Word and our Savior are ALL about truth. Moreover, the flocks of the shepherds who propagate the Amillennial view are not preparing their flocks for the things that are coming upon the Earth, things that Luke records Jesus saying will "make men's hearts melt with fear." Little wonder, when things that are only allegory are suddenly happening in real time!
